You're best off making a film that goes with the mood of the song as you dont want the atmosphere the vision creates and the atmosphere the audio creates conflicting as it can create a confusing film and just wont work.
I find it best to listen too music and as soon as you hear it, whatever you imagine first from the tone of the song let it run wild in your head and create a whole film too go with that song. This helps to refine what sort of things you match up to certain songs which will overall help you make a better film.
There are no good, free, editing suites. Thats the truth of it. If you want good editing software you're going to have to come too terms with the fact that you'll be spending money. Perhaps the cheapest there is (that is also used professionally) is Sony Vegas Platinum Pro 9. This is a good editing suite and you can find it for under $200 in shops and under $150 on Ebay.
Ebay is awesome for amateur filmmakers.
Good luck with the film hope I've been of use.
